OTHER: The Seaberry is an ornamental shrub with tasty edible fruit & a wide variety of uses. They are used for ‘eco-environmental improvement’, a food coloring, have traditional medicinal uses, & are used by the cosmetics industry for soaps, lotions, & more. Their oil is utilized in a number of fashions, their leaves are used as livestock feed, & other parts for poultry feed.

These extremely cold hardy plants are native to Europe & Asia, & grow at a medium rate. With spiny branches, they make a great border shrub and security plant. Seaberry shrubs are also planted as a shelterbelt / windbreak, & one of my favorites – to provide habitat & shelter for a variety of birds & small mammals. The plants are deciduous, with narrow leaves that have a silvery color in season. Seaberries are dioecious & are pollinated by the wind.

The Seaberry Shrub is very tolerant of a wide variety of conditions. They do very well in moist areas, & can be found streamside & at pond edges, etc., but are able to grow just dandy in average water conditions & can even tolerate drought. As their name suggests, they are comfortable seaside, having no problem with coastal conditions like salt & wind. The Seaberry is not picky about its soil, & can grow in nutritionally poor soils as well as loose sandy soil & heavy clays. They even help fix nitrogen in the soil to make it more fertile. Seaberry shrubs develop deep root systems, so are used to prevent erosion, for land reclamation, & in agroforestry.

The Seaberry is grown commercially for its delicious fruit. The bright orange berries grow in clusters & are very showy. They measure around 1/3” long each & are round to oval shaped. Seaberries are high in Vitamins, including Vitamin C (more than in oranges!), Vitamin E, & more. The fragrant fruit can be eaten raw or cooked, & is made into juices, jams, sauces, liquor, teas, soups, pies, & more. The leaves are also dried & made into a tea. Seaberries are a bit acidic, but are less so if they are harvested after a frost or are cooked. The fruit ripens in September, & the long lasting berries will remain on the shrub providing interest into the winter if they are not collected, & provide a great source of food for birds in the lean months.
